Starting a vehicle only to have it quit immediately after can be confusing and annoying for many drivers especially if their vehicle has not experienced this type of issue before. Typically, a vehicle will start and then quit because of an issue with the fuel or electrical system.

It is important to monitor fuel levels as well as warning lights which can signal to the driver that a vehicle may quit unexpectedly. To start a vehicle, the electrical system, composed of the battery and starter, turns the engine over. Once running, the engine requires a constant flow of gasoline and good spark to keep that fuel igniting.

If gasoline is not readily available, or if there is not enough spark, the engine will quit. More modern vehicles with sophisticated computers may affect the way the vehicle runs. An issue with the mass airflow sensor may manifest itself when a car starts and then stalls soon after starting. Fuel Pump Relay: The fuel pump relay functions much like a fuse for an electric fuel pump.

The fuel pump relay engages as the vehicle is started and starts the fuel pump. While the vehicle is running, the fuel pump relay turns off and the fuel pump is powered by the oil pressure sending unit. When an ignition coil begins to fail, it may struggle to provide consistent spark to the plugs, causing the engine to stall after starting. A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the reason why the vehicle starts and then dies. The mechanic will then provide a detailed inspection report outlining why the vehicle quit and the cost of any repairs that need to be made.

Using this information, the mechanic can begin necessary repairs. If your vehicle has a bad or failing mass airflow sensor, the mechanic will begin by finding the sensor in the engine bay and checking for any signs of failure.

The mechanic should check the wire harness connected to the sensor to ensure that all of wires are properly connected. After removing the sensor, the mechanic should be able to discover the nature of the failure and replace the sensor.

If the mechanic suspects that the ignition coil may be faulty, he or she should first disconnect the battery before beginning work.

The mechanic should then begin the process of disconnecting wires from the ignition coil and removing it from the engine bay. The mechanic will then install the new ignition coil and ensure that it is connected properly. The mechanic should then reconnect the battery and test the new coil. With all repairs, the mechanic will ensure the newly installed parts work properly.

The mechanic can then turn off and warning lights that may have come on while the vehicle was not running properly. If your vehicle is starting but dying soon after starting, you should have it checked out by a mechanic. Issues involving the fuel management and electrical systems will become worse if not dealt with. Diligence and paying attention to warning lights may help prevent further damage to critical engine component and may save money in repairs.

A vehicle that quits after starting can be inconvenient and having a mobile mechanic inspect and repair you vehicle will ensure that you and your vehicle are back on the road soon. Although it is a little cumbersome, you could try to rule in or out a fault in the fuel delivery system by having an assistant quickly introduce "starter fluid" into the intake right at the point very quickly, of course that the engine starts to cut out.

Of course, you will do this experiment on a cold day. If the introduction of starter fluid keeps the engine running, during these stumbles, that would point toward a fuel delivery issue although the delivery problem could itself be the result of a faulty engine temperature sensor. A faulty temperature sensor will mis-report to the PCM and not enrich the mixture at cold start-up thus causing the engine to immediately stumble.

It is also possible that the relay that drives the fuel pump is cutting out during initial start-up. There are other obvious possibilities include the idle air control valve. A certified professional, like one from YourMechanic, could perform an appropriate engine management diagnostic and get this resolved for you. Put another way, the symptom you are reporting is not of space shuttle complexity and thus it should have been fully resolved during your first visit.

So i finished installing the fuel pump and filter well it started right up, one minor problem i thought i would adress is the splash shield and to find it with ur hand inside the tank before u repeatedly try to put the fuel pump assembly back in lol. That's probly not your problem, but worth mentioning I guess. Mine did something like this except it was after a wide open throttle and couldn't get it to run until I gave it gas while starting it. Never did it again.

I too would like to know what caused it. I once had a limited and it did the same thing and nothing happens for a while. Then one day it finally gave up and it won't stay running at all. After changing all the necessary parts it still wouldn't stay running.

So we changed out the fuel pump to see if it was it. After replacing the fuel pump I was able to drive another 80 thousand miles before I traded it in with no issue at all. So for about the past year or so my V6 4R has been randomly dying at stop lights and taco bell drive throughs after idling really rough for a couple seconds. Find More Posts by airbag. If I still have rough idle and occasional dieing, then I'm going to clean the MAF too and see what happens then. I'll also be replacing spark plugs soon, but I don't want to do everything at one time because I want to know what was the actual fix of the problem.

Anyhow, I'll post results. I have taken the intake off before to clean the butterfly in the throtle body. I am having the same issue. Rear diff breather extension. ISR mod. LED gauges. The IAC is located on the underside of the throttle body. There is an electrical clip that attaches to it as well as two coolant hoses.

It's held to the throttle body with 4 super tight screws. Good Luck, it did wonders on mine! It could be fuel related. Maybe a fuel filter, fuel injectors, or fuel pump.

I had the same problem time couple months ago too. The car was having a rough idle, check engine light is on and such. It came to one point when the car died when I was getting the mail. The month before I went to the shop and have it checked out the check engine light and they told me my isc valve idle speed control and it was dirty from what they the dealership told me it needed to replace.

So I did that and ever since then everything has been good. The thing was wrong with my isc valve was the carbon build up and thus my engine was getting enough air into it to keep it going. How's your holding up?

Give them a call before heading in, caused I called and the stealership didn't have it in stock. I have no idea what the deal is. Mine was loaded with carbon build up. BB code is On. Smilies are On. Mark Forums Read.I replaced fuel pump about a year ago with no problems until now I just installed a new fuel filter nothing changed still starts and dies I started having some weird electrical issues in the last week before it wouldn't start some of them are auto headlights not working no dome light or cargo light and the word security staying on all the time in my message center its looking like an electrical problem more than fuel any suggestions?

I believe it has something to do with your spark plug, you should also check all the wires going to your battery to make sure there isn't a split, burnt, or a short in your wires. But first replace the spark plug the check your wires.

I wish you the best of luck. Larry answered 4 years ago. Shorty63 answered about a year ago. GuruH6X8V answered 8 months ago. Engine starts right up then dies. It happened last year as well.

Although I tried to start it multiple times over a couple weeks I gave it one last try after I called the tow truck. It started right up and engine stayed running like it was supposed to. No more problems for almost a year until about a week ago. I did nothin to fix it a year ago.

I'm still trying to start it periodically like a year ago. Hopefully I'll eventually get it to stay running so I wont need to pay for a tow. GuruNHC71 answered 5 months ago. Gladeeric, same thing here. GuruPC1RZ answered 2 months ago. You can reset the passlock system takes about 30 or 40 mins this will usually fix the problem however it will usually do it to you again at the absolute worst possible times. You can bypass the security system completely and never worry about the problem again.

You will not have a security system in your vehicle once it is bypassed. To reset the pass lock system Make sure your battery is fully charged as your key will be on for 30 to 45 minutes while you are resetting the passlock system. Start your vehicle and let it die once it dies your security light will start flashing leave your key in the on position The security light will flash for roughly 10 minutes and then will either stay illuminated or will go off once it stays illuminated or goes off turn your key off for 15 seconds then start your truck again and let it die repeat this process three times and on the third time the vehicle should start and stay running if it does not on the third time do it again sometimes it takes four times sometimes only three.

If you would like to bypass the pass lock security system also known as the VATS system you will perform this exact same procedure The only difference is you will need to take the plastic cover off of your steering column top and bottom. Right above your key you will see three wires the one to the far right will be red the middle one and the far left one are normally yellow and orange however the colors do vary sometimes do not mess with the red wire but cut the yellow and orange wire.

Tie the yellow and orange wire together on one side of where you cut as well as tie the yellow and orange wire together on the opposite side of where you cut so both sides should be tied together heat shrink or wire nut the wires together then perform the procedure to reset your pass lock once your truck starts and stays running after 3 or 4 times of doing it your security system has been disabled and you should never have to worry about that again.
